Carbon Nitriding

Carbon nitriding is a case hardening process in which both carbon and nitrogen are diffused into the surface of steel. The process is carried out at 700–880°C.

It produces a hard surface layer with a tough core.

Furnace Types Used:

  • Gas carburizing furnace
  • Sealed quench furnace
  • Fluidized bed furnace

Applications:
Gears, cams, fasteners
