Tempering

Tempering is performed after hardening to reduce brittleness and internal stresses. The hardened steel is reheated to a temperature below the critical temperature (150–650°C) and held for a specific time, then cooled in air.

Tempering improves toughness, ductility, and shock resistance while maintaining required hardness.
